Silicon Metal Packaging: Export-Ready Solutions for Lumps, Granules & Powder

Silicon metal packaging is not a cosmetic choice - it is what stands between a clean batch at the smelter and a degraded, oxidized, or contaminated load at the destination port. The right package keeps moisture out, dust in, and stacking stable across thousands of kilometers of sea freight. The wrong one leads to rejected shipments, customs delays, and write-offs.

This page breaks down the four standard silicon metal packaging formats used in international ferroalloy trade, the moisture and dust controls that actually work, and the pre-shipment checklist our warehouse runs before every container seal.

📦 How Is Silicon Metal Packed for Export?

12

Silicon metal ships in three physical forms - lumps, granules, and powder - and each form dictates the packaging method. Lumps and granules are relatively inert and free-flowing, so they travel well in woven polypropylene bulk bags. Powder is a different animal: fine silicon particles are classified as flammable solids, and airborne dust can form explosive mixtures. Powder therefore requires sealed steel drums or heavy-duty laminated bags with dust-tight closures.

The standard unit weight for bulk export is 1 metric ton per package, though smaller 25 kg bags nested inside a master jumbo bag are common when the consignee lacks bulk-handling equipment.

🏗️ Packaging Format Comparison

1 MT Jumbo Bags (FIBC) - The Default for Lumps & Granules

Woven polypropylene jumbo bags, also called FIBCs (Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers), are the industry-typical choice for silicon metal packaging in lump and granular form. A standard 1 MT bag measures roughly 90–100 cm per side and is built from UV-stabilized PP fabric rated for a 5:1 or 6:1 safety factor. Bags are typically four-loop sling style, allowing forklift handling from the top.

For export, bags are palletized on wooden or plastic pallets measuring 110 × 110 cm or 120 × 100 cm. Palletization prevents direct contact with container floors, improves forklift handling at the discharge port, and reduces bag damage from shifting during ocean transit. A 20-foot container typically loads 20–22 MT of palletized jumbo bags, depending on bag dimensions and pallet height.

Moisture protection is added via an inner polyethylene liner (PE liner) heat-sealed inside the PP shell. Without the liner, humidity during a 30-day sea voyage can oxidize surface silicon, raising surface silica content and triggering rejection at inbound inspection.

25 kg Small Woven Bags - Nested Inside Master Bags

When the end user lacks bulk unloading equipment, 25 kg small woven bags are the practical fallback. Each small bag is sealed and then loaded into a 1 MT outer master bag for container stowage. This gives the receiver manual handling flexibility while preserving the shipping efficiency of bulk loading.

The trade-off is labor cost: both packing and unpacking take longer, and the extra handling steps raise the risk of torn bags. For this reason, 25 kg nested packaging is usually priced as an add-on rather than the default.

Steel Drums - Required for Silicon Metal Powder

Fine silicon metal powder is a flammable solid (Hazard Class 4.1 per UN1346, Packing Group III), and dust-air mixtures can ignite at temperatures around 780 °C with a lower explosive limit of roughly 160 g/m³. That is why powder does not travel in open FIBCs.

Industry-typical steel drums for silicon powder are tight-head drums with a nominal capacity of 200 kg net weight. Drum dimensions run approximately 571 mm in diameter and 880–950 mm in height, fitted with 2-inch and 3/4-inch closures. The drums are sealed with gaskets to prevent moisture ingress and dust egress.

On a 20-foot container, roughly 80 steel drums fit when palletized, yielding a total payload of approximately 16 MT. Drums are typically loaded on wooden pallets (4 drums per pallet) and secured with strapping or stretch wrap to prevent movement.

IBC Totes - Bulk Liquid-Style Containers for Large Powder Lots

For customers ordering powder in larger lots, 1,000 kg IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) totes offer a middle ground between drums and jumbo bags. A standard IBC measures roughly 1,200 × 1,000 × 1,160 mm and includes an integrated discharge valve. One 20-foot container loads approximately 18 IBC units.

IBCs provide better moisture and dust sealing than FIBCs but are less common in ferroalloy trade because the upfront container cost is higher and return logistics are complicated for one-way international shipments. They are typically used for repeat customers with established return or buyback agreements.

🌊 Moisture & Dust Control: What Actually Works

Moisture is the single biggest enemy of silicon metal quality in transit. Even a small amount of surface oxidation raises silica content, which can throw off alloy chemistry or contaminate chlorosilane reactions. Effective silicon metal packaging addresses this at three levels:

  • Inner liner: A heat-sealed PE liner inside the PP jumbo bag creates a vapor barrier. The liner thickness is typically 80–120 microns.
  • Container desiccants: Silica gel or calcium chloride desiccant bags are hung inside the container, particularly on routes through humid climates or during monsoon-season loading.
  • Floor protection: Plastic sheeting or dunnage covers the container floor before pallet loading, preventing moisture wicking from wood or residual condensation.

For powder, dust control is equally critical. Steel drums with gasketed closures prevent dust release during handling. Drum labels include the UN1346 hazard marking, flammable-solid warning symbols, and proper shipping names as required by IMDG and DOT regulations.

📋 Export Packaging Checklist

Before any container departs our warehouse, the following items are verified and documented:

  • Bag / drum count matches the packing list and commercial invoice
  • Net and gross weight recorded per package, with total verified against scale tickets
  • PE liner integrity checked on a sampled basis for jumbo bags
  • Steel drum closures torqued and leak-tested (powder shipments)
  • Pallet condition inspected - no broken boards, protruding nails, or moisture stains
  • Container cleanliness confirmed - dry, odor-free, no holes or rust flakes
  • Desiccant placement documented with photo record
  • Shipping marks applied - consignee, port of discharge, batch number, gross/net weight, handling symbols
  • Hazard labels affixed for powder (Class 4.1 flammable solid, UN1346)
  • Certificate of Analysis (COA) packed in a waterproof pouch attached to the container door

This checklist is not optional paperwork - it is the difference between a smooth customs clearance and a container sitting in a bonded warehouse for two weeks while inspectors argue over bag counts.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions About Silicon Metal Packaging

What is the standard packaging for silicon metal lumps?

The industry-typical default is 1 MT jumbo bags made of woven polypropylene with an inner PE liner, palletized for forklift handling. A 20-foot container loads approximately 20–22 MT.

Can silicon metal powder be shipped in jumbo bags?

No. Silicon metal powder is classified as a flammable solid (UN1346, Class 4.1). It must be packed in sealed steel drums or heavy-duty laminated bags with dust-tight closures to prevent dust-air ignition hazards.

How much does a 20-foot container of silicon metal hold?

For palletized 1 MT jumbo bags, a 20-foot container typically holds 20–22 MT. For steel drums, approximately 16 MT (80 drums × 200 kg). Exact capacity depends on bag dimensions, pallet type, and stowage factor.

Is custom packaging available for silicon metal?

Yes. Custom packaging - including branded bags, specific pallet dimensions, double-liner configurations, or non-standard drum sizes - can be arranged for recurring orders or special handling requirements. Lead time and minimum order quantities apply.

What shipping marks are required on silicon metal export packages?

Standard marks include consignee name, port of discharge, gross and net weight, batch number, and handling symbols. For powder, UN1346 hazard labels and flammable-solid placards are mandatory under IMDG and DOT regulations.

How is moisture prevented during ocean freight?

Moisture control relies on three layers: an inner PE liner inside each bag, container-floor dunnage or plastic sheeting, and hanging desiccant bags inside the container. These measures are especially important on routes through tropical or monsoon climates.
