When calcium carbide (CaC₂) reacts with water (H₂O), a chemical reaction occurs that produces acetylene gas (C₂H₂) and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂).

What Happens With This Reaction?
Acetylene gas formation:
Aflammable gas is released, which is used in welding, lighting and chemical production.
When ignited, acetylene burns with a bright, high-temperature flame.
Formation of calcium hydroxide (hydrated lime):
A strongly alkaline substance, in contact with which it can cause skin irritation and burns.
After the reaction, a white, powdery or gel-like residue appears.
Heat generation (exothermic reaction):
The reaction generates heat, making the process potentially dangerous if left unchecked.
Real Areas Of Application Of This Reaction:
Production of acetylene for welding and chemical synthesis.
Carbide lamps (historically used in mining and speleology).
