Ferrosilicon is a mixture of silicon and iron. It contains between 15 and 90% silicon. It is widely used in the metallurgical industry, especially in the production of steel and cast iron. Its main function is to improve the mechanical properties of metals, such as strength and corrosion resistance.
It is produced in electric furnaces at a temperature of about 1500-2000 degrees Celsius. There are different grades of ferrosilicon, depending on the amount of silicon in it, such as FeSi75 and FeSi90. For example, FeSi75 contains about 75% silicon and is used for mixing with steels, as well as for reducing the oxygen and sulfur content of metals.
