The amount of vanadium carbides formed depends on the amount of vanadium. Ferro vanadium 60, which contains 60% vanadium, produces fewer carbides than ferro vanadium 80, which contains 80% vanadium. The size of these carbides is also important. Coarser VC particles (≥5μm) make them more resistant to wear and tear, but may reduce how strong they are. The addition of finer particles (less than 2 μm) makes them both harder and more flexible. Controlling the shape of carbide requires precise control of the melting temperature (1,550-1,650°C) and cooling rates, to make sure it is distributed in the right way for the job.
