Ferro Silicon 72
Making ferro silicon involves heating quartz and iron in special furnaces called submerged arc furnaces. These are heated to between 1800 and 2000°C. Ferro silicon 72% Si is used a lot in the Pidgeon process to make magnesium, because it makes the reduction reaction more steady. The alloy's density (3.5g/cm³) makes it easy to settle in molten steel. It is very important to use low-carbon variants (less than 0.05% carbon) when making electrical steel. This is because carbon impurities can make the steel lose its magnetic properties.
