Vanadium Pentoxide Market: Supply, Demand and the 2026 Setup
📅 Last reviewed: 20 September 2026. "Market" here means the physical V₂O₅ trade, not a traded future - there isn't one.
TL;DR - the structure
- Supply is concentrated: China produced an estimated 82,000 t of vanadium-in-content in 2025, out of a ~110,000 t world total - roughly three-quarters of mine supply (USGS MCS 2026).
- Demand is steel: about 90% of vanadium goes into steel alloying; VRFB storage is the growth story but still a single-digit share (Critical & Strategic Metals Hub).
- Reserves are oddly distributed: world reserves are ~21,000 thousand tonnes (USGS), but South Africa and Australia hold far more resource than their current mine output suggests - a reminder that "tight today" is not "tight forever."
- We are not calling the 2026 direction. We describe the levers and let you judge.
🏭 Supply: where V₂O₅ actually comes from
Most vanadium pentoxide is a co-product. In China it comes from vanadium-bearing magnetite (vanadiferous titanomagnetite) and, importantly, from steel slag - the residue of vanadium-bearing iron used in certain steel mills. That slag route is why vanadium supply tracks steel output: when mills run, slag V is recovered; when they idle, secondary supply drops even if mines don't.
| Country | 2025 mine output (t V) | Reserves (thousand t) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| China | 82,000 | 5,800 | Largest, slag + ore |
| Russia | 21,000 | 5,000 | Concentrated, sanctioned-trade sensitive |
| South Africa | 5,000 | 520 | Small current output vs huge resource |
| Brazil | 5,300 | 94 | Growing |
| World | ~110,000 | 21,000 | Rounded (USGS 2026) |
⚠️ Source caveat we keep: the USGS 2026 vanadium table and its prose disagree on South Africa vs Brazil (one says 5,000/5,300, the other swaps them). We used the table. The world total is what matters for a buyer, and it rounds to ~110,000 t.
🔩 Demand: steel first, batteries second
The honest order of demand: high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel, rebar, and specialty tool steels take the vast majority. Vanadium makes steel stronger at lower weight - that is why it lives in skyscraper rebar, bridge cable, and drill string. Vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB) are the headline growth market, but even the bull case keeps storage under ~10% of demand through 2025.
The implication for a V₂O₅ buyer: your price risk is mostly a Chinese-steel-policy risk. When Beijing tightens rebar strength standards, vanadium intensity per tonne of steel rises and spot tightens within weeks. We have seen this twice this decade.

🌍 The China factor, stated plainly
China is both the largest producer and the largest consumer. That dual role means export availability depends on domestic absorption, not just mine output. A weak Chinese construction market can actually increase exportable V₂O₅ (mills dump slag-derived material abroad) - which is part of why 2024–2025 prices softened even as "green steel" narratives spread. We call this out because vendor pages rarely do.
⚡ The storage wildcard
VRFB deployments reached roughly 1.6 GWh globally by Q1 2026 (Earth Energy Log, Apr 2026). A 1 MWh VRFB electrolyte at ~1.6 mol/L holds about 5–6 tonnes of V₂O₅. So 1.6 GWh ≈ 8,000–9,600 t of V₂O₅ locked in batteries - meaningful, but still small next to ~100,000 t/yr of steel demand. Storage is a floor, not a spike.
🧭 Our 2026 read (judgement, labelled)
- Base case: range-bound near 2025 levels, with China steel policy as the main swing factor.
- Upside: a Chinese rebar-standard tightening or a major converter outage.
- Downside: prolonged Chinese property weakness pushing more export tonnage onto the seaborne market.
- We do not give a number. If a supplier quotes you a "2026 average price," ask them to show the basis.
✅ How we help buyers
- We source 98% and 99% V₂O₅ flake and can split container lots.
- We state origin and basis on every quote - no "market price" hand-waving.
- We flag the data caveats above so your planning does not rest on a swapped decimal.
📤 Trade flows: who actually exports
China is the swing exporter. Because so much V₂O₅ is slag-derived, export tonnage rises when domestic Chinese steel demand softens - mills recover the vanadium but have less home demand for it, so the surplus is offered to the seaborne market. Russia's ~21,000 t (2025) mostly serves non-Western routes, and trade-restricted flows from there have at times tightened European availability and pushed Rotterdam premiums. We do not model sanctions; we note only that regional supply can shift faster than mine output suggests, which is why a buyer watching only "world mine total" misses the part that moves price.
🔬 Substitutes and why vanadium keeps its share
Niobium (columbium) is the main substitute in some rebar and HSLA applications, and a few specs allow V/Nb or V/Ti blends. But vanadium's strength-per-cost and its behaviour in micro-alloyed steel keep it dominant where weldability and toughness matter. We flag this because a "vanadium shortage" headline sometimes ignores that mills can blend down - which caps how high price can run on a pure supply story. The ceiling on vanadium is partly set by substitution, not just by mine supply, and that is a fact worth holding when someone sells you a scarcity panic.
📈 How supply responds to price
The slag route makes vanadium supply-inelastic in the short run but responsive over quarters. You cannot open a slag tap faster than the steel mill runs, so a sudden steel rebound tightens V₂O₅ within weeks while mine supply stays flat. Conversely, when steel idles, secondary V₂O₅ drops even if Kazakhstan or Brazil mines keep producing. That asymmetry is why price spikes are sharp but usually brief, and why we counsel buyers to watch converter run-rates, not just the headline mine numbers. A mine-counting view of this market is the most common way to be wrong about it.
🧮 A word on reserve life
Headline reserve numbers (world ~21,000 thousand tonnes per USGS) look large, but reserve life is not supply responsiveness. South Africa and Australia hold resources far above their current output, yet those tonnes need permitting, capex and years to reach market. For a buyer planning 2026–2027, what matters is the next eight quarters of mine-plus-slag output, not the geological endowment. We keep the two separate so a "centuries of reserves" line does not lull you into ignoring a tight spot market that is driven by steel cycles, not by geology.
❓ Frequently asked questions
Who produces the most vanadium pentoxide?
China, at an estimated 82,000 t of vanadium-in-content in 2025 (~75% of the ~110,000 t world total per USGS MCS 2026). Russia and Brazil follow; South Africa's resource is large but its current output is small.
Why does vanadium price track steel, not batteries?
About 90% of vanadium goes into steel alloying; VRFB storage was still under 10% of demand in 2025. Steel rebar and HSLA specs set the marginal tonne, so policy there moves spot faster than battery headlines.
Is vanadium supply at risk of shortage?
Not structurally - world reserves are ~21,000 thousand tonnes and output is concentrated but adequate for current demand. Short-term tightness comes from Chinese steel cycles and converter outages, not from running out of ore.
How much V₂O₅ does a vanadium battery need?
A 1 MWh VRFB at ~1.6 mol/L electrolyte holds roughly 5–6 tonnes of V₂O₅. Global VRFB deployments (~1.6 GWh by Q1 2026) therefore lock in ~8,000–9,600 t - real, but small versus ~100,000 t/yr steel demand.
Should I worry about Russian supply sanctions?
Russia was ~21,000 t (2025) and trade-restricted flows do affect regional prices. We do not advise on sanctions; confirm your own compliance and Incoterms before sourcing from any sanctioned-origin material.
What is the single best indicator to watch?
Chinese rebar output and converter run-rates, plus the cash-vs-acceptance spread on domestic flake. Those move V₂O₅ before battery or macro headlines do.
