Silicon nitride ceramics are durable, conduct heat well, and do not change shape much when heated or cooled. They can also withstand high temperatures and pressure without collapsing, which is unusual for ceramics. Due to its lightness, silicon nitride is often used to make human bone prostheses.
Compared to silica, nitride in the amorphous state has a higher concentration of electron and hole traps (about 10-19 cm-3), with these traps being relatively deep (about 1.5 eV). This allows silicon nitride to be used as an efficient memory device: the electrons and holes injected into it are captured by traps and can remain in them for about 10 years at a temperature of 85 °C.
In addition, silicon nitride has a high dielectric constant (7) compared to oxide (3,9), so it is used as an insulator in a number of devices.
