High Purity Silicon Nitride Description
Silicon nitride is stable in the presence of nitric, sulfuric and hydrochloric acids, and reacts less well with orthophosphoric acid. However, it reacts much more strongly with hydrofluoric acid. Silicon nitride is decomposed by alkali melts, oxides and carbonates of alkali metals. It does not react with chlorine up to 900°C, hydrogen sulfide up to 1000°C and hydrogen up to 1200°C. It does not react with Al, Pb, Sn, Zn, Bi, Cd, Cu melts; however, it forms silicides with transition metals and silicates with metal oxides at temperatures above 1200 °C. Oxidation of silicon nitride in air begins at temperatures above 900 °C.
