Basic properties of ferrosilicon powder
I. Physicochemical Properties and Specifications of Ferrosilicon Powder The core components of ferrosilicon powder are silicon (Si) and iron (Fe), with small amounts of aluminum (Al), calcium (Ca), and manganese (Mn). According to GB/T 2272-2009 standard, the silicon content of common grades FeSi45 ranges from 43% to 47%, and that of FeSi75 ranges from 72% to 75%. Regarding impurities, manganese is less than 0.7%, carbon less than 0.1%, sulfur less than 0.02%, and phosphorus less than 0.04%.
In terms of physical properties, the melting point of 75% ferrosilicon is approximately 1360℃, the density of ferrosilicon powder is approximately 4.75 g/cm³, the loose specific gravity is approximately 2.5 g/cm³, and the flow velocity (Hall flow meter method) is approximately 50 g/41 seconds. Regarding particle size, common specifications on the market include 40 mesh, 50 mesh, 60 mesh, 80 mesh, 100 mesh, and 150 mesh, and custom sizes are also available upon request.
There are three main processes for preparing ferrosilicon powder: remelting, pulverization, and atomization. Atomization, using vacuum water atomization, produces powder with good sphericity, making it more popular in high-end applications such as welding materials. Pulverization requires strict control of material temperature to prevent oxidation of the ferrosilicon alloy during the pulverization process.
Different applications have significantly different particle size requirements. For example, low-silicon ferrosilicon powder (Si content 14%-16%) used in mineral processing for heavy media commonly has particle sizes including 65D, 150D, and 270D. Finer particle sizes result in a larger specific surface area, which in turn affects reactivity and suspension performance-a pair of characteristics that need to be balanced based on the application. Choosing the wrong particle size can either affect the sorting effect or increase unnecessary costs-a common occurrence among our clients.
