Ferro-vanadium is a type of iron alloy that contains vanadium. It is used in steel production to give metal strength. The main raw material for ferro-vanadium production in China is a mineral called vanadium titanomagnetite. Vanadium-containing pig iron is purified in a blast furnace, and vanadium slag is recovered by a spray furnace or converter blast. Vanadium slag is crushed, sodium salt (soda ash, salt, or anhydrous myrtenite) is added for sodium oxide firing to convert vanadium into soluble sodium metavanadate (NaVO3). Ammonium sulfate is then added to produce ammonium polyvanate. It is then deaminated and melted to produce vanadium pentoxide sheets.
