GPC Packaging: Fines, Freight and the Six Ways a Bag Fails
Short answer
Buy GPC packaging on discharge method and moisture protection, not on price. Jumbo bags against 25 kg bags is worth USD 16 to 32 per tonne in bag cost alone - roughly the same as a whole particle-size change, and it is the lever almost nobody negotiates.
The fines worry that drives most packaging arguments is overstated. Graphitized petroleum coke is specified as high hardness and low friability, and even if it did degrade, 0–1 mm material is quoted at only USD 20 to 40 per tonne below 1–5 mm. Three percent degradation costs about USD 0.90 per tonne if you can use the fines.
Four formats, and what each one is actually for
| Format | Typical build | Suits | Cost signal | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 kg jumbo bag | Woven PP, 4 lifting loops, inner liner | Bulk handling, silo or skip discharge, most steel and larger foundry users | Baseline | Loop damage, UV degradation, no liner on humid routes |
| 25 kg bags on pallet | Two-layer kraft with waterproof ply, 40 per tonne, palletised and wrapped | Manual charging, small foundries, hand-addition at the furnace | +16 to 32 USD/t | Pallet void wasting container space, ISPM 15 on the wood |
| 500 kg jumbo | As 1,000 kg, half fill | Sites with limited lifting capacity | +8 to 20 USD/t (judgement) | You pay for twice the bags and get no extra product |
| Bulk / unbatched | No packaging | Very large consumers with closed systems | cheapest per tonne | Moisture, contamination and total loss of batch traceability |
There is no best answer and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. If your addition point is a ladle fed from a skip, jumbo bags win on every measure that can be measured. If your operator is tipping 25 kg bags into a charge by hand, jumbo bags are a safety problem waiting to happen and the extra packaging cost is irrelevant next to that.
The fines panic, priced
Buyers worry about this more than the numbers justify, and we want to show why.
First, the material property. Published physical characteristics for GPC list hardness as high and friability as low. That is precisely the description of a material that does not break up much in transit. Second, the commercial penalty. Published 2026 grade tables put 0–1 mm material at USD 700–780 per tonne against USD 720–820 for 1–5 mm - a discount of only USD 20 to 40.
| Scenario | Arithmetic | USD per tonne |
|---|---|---|
| Fines generated | 1,000 kg × 3% | 30 kg |
| Value at 1–5 mm midpoint (USD 770/t) | 30 × 0.770 | 23.10 |
| Value at 0–1 mm midpoint (USD 740/t) | 30 × 0.740 | 22.20 |
| Loss if you can use the fines | 23.10 − 22.20 | 0.90 |
| Loss if you must screen and discard | full value, plus screening | 23.10 + |
That table is the whole argument. Under a dollar a tonne if your process tolerates fines. Twenty-three dollars a tonne and rising if it does not. So the question to ask is not "how much will degrade" but "what happens to 0–1 mm material when it reaches my furnace" - and that is a process question, not a packaging one.
Container loading, and why bulk density decides your freight
Published bulk density for GPC is 0.80 to 1.05 tonnes per cubic metre depending on particle size. That range is wide enough to change what fits in a box, and almost no quote states it.
| Bulk density (t/m³) | Volume per tonne (m³) | Bags by volume | Bags by payload | Loaded | Binding |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.80 | 1.250 | 26 | 28 | 26 t | Volume |
| 0.85 | 1.176 | 28 | 28 | 28 t | Both |
| 0.90 | 1.111 | 29 | 28 | 28 t | Weight |
| 0.95 | 1.053 | 31 | 28 | 28 t | Weight |
| 1.00 | 1.000 | 33 | 28 | 28 t | Weight |
| 1.05 | 0.952 | 34 | 28 | 28 t | Weight |
Assumptions behind that table, stated so you can correct them: 33 cubic metres of usable internal volume and a 28 tonne payload, both typical for a 20 ft general purpose box and neither something you should treat as exact for your forwarder's equipment.
The finding is that only at the very bottom of the published density range does volume bind. Above about 0.85 t/m³ you are weight-limited and density stops mattering. Which means the practical advice is simple: plan on 26 tonnes unless your supplier gives you a measured bulk density, and if they quote 28 tonnes, ask where the number came from.
For 25 kg bags on pallets, expect to lose more volume than the arithmetic suggests - pallet footprints and the void between them do not pack into a container as efficiently as loose jumbo bags. We would plan on roughly 10 to 15 percent less product per box, and flag that as our judgement rather than a measured figure.
Six ways a bag fails
Compiled from what goes wrong often enough to be worth designing against. Each card has the clause that prevents it.
The packing clause to copy
Six lines. Add them to your purchase order and most of the above becomes a supplier problem rather than yours.
PACKING CLAUSE - GPC
1 Format 1,000 kg jumbo bags, woven PP, UV-stabilised, 4 lifting
loops, SWL 1,500 kg, safety factor 5:1, with inner liner.
2 Fill 1,000 kg nominal, 1,050 kg maximum. Bags to stack two-high.
3 Liner Food-grade equivalent PE liner, sealed, for all shipments
transiting or stored outdoors.
4 Pallets ISPM 15 compliant, marked, if palletised. Furnigation
certificate to accompany documents.
5 Marking Batch number, gross and net weight, and production date
printed on every bag. Batch number to match the COA.
6 Suitability Packing to remain fit for discharge after 90 days outdoor
storage at the load port.
DISCHARGE NOTE Lift, do not drag. Report any bag failing on discharge
with photographs before the container is released.
Line six is the one suppliers push back on, and it is worth holding. Ninety days of outdoor storage is realistic for a container that sits through a slow booking season, and the cost of UV-stabilised fabric is a rounding error on a product at USD 850 to 1,050 per tonne.
Frequently asked questions
How is graphitized petroleum coke packed?Almost always in 1,000 kg jumbo bags with a liner, or in 25 kg multiwall kraft bags with a waterproof ply, palletised and often shrink-wrapped. Chinese supplier listings sampled in August 2026 offer both, sometimes presenting the 25 kg bags as a tonne on a fumigated pallet. Choose on discharge method far more than on price.
What is the difference between jumbo bags and 25 kg bags for GPC?
Cost and handling. A tonne in 25 kg bags needs 40 bags against one jumbo, and at roughly USD 0.40 to 0.80 per bag that is USD 16 to 32 per tonne in packaging alone, plus more handling labour at both ends. Jumbo bags need a lifting frame or forklift; 25 kg bags can be handled by hand but are slower and generate more waste.
Does GPC degrade into fines during shipping?
Less than buyers fear. Published physical characteristics describe GPC as high hardness and low friability, which is exactly the property that resists transit degradation. And even when it happens the commercial penalty is small: 0–1 mm material is quoted at USD 700–780 against USD 720–820 for 1–5 mm, a discount of only USD 20 to 40 per tonne.
How much does GPC fines generation actually cost?
About USD 0.90 per tonne if you can use the fines, and about USD 23 per tonne if you cannot. Three percent degradation on a tonne is 30 kg; at the 1–5 mm midpoint of USD 770 that is USD 23.10 and at the 0–1 mm midpoint of USD 740 it is USD 22.20. The gap is under a dollar. It is a process question, not a price question.
How many jumbo bags of GPC fit in a 20 foot container?
About 26 to 28, depending on bulk density. Published bulk density is 0.80 to 1.05 tonnes per cubic metre, so a tonne occupies 0.95 to 1.25 cubic metres. Against roughly 33 cubic metres of usable volume and a 28 tonne payload, volume binds at the low-density end and weight binds at the rest. Plan on 26 tonnes unless you have a measured density.
Why does bulk density matter for GPC shipping?
It decides whether your container fills by volume or by weight, and therefore your freight per tonne. At 0.80 tonnes per cubic metre you fit about 26 tonnes and are shipping air you could have filled. At 1.05 you hit the weight limit with space to spare. Asking for bulk density on the quote costs nothing.
Does GPC need a liner in the bag?
Yes, on any route touching a humid port or a yard in a wet season. The published specification caps moisture at or below 0.50 percent and a shipping container is not a sealed environment. Moisture pickup is the most common and most avoidable quality complaint on arrival - and you pay for the water at carbon price.
What is ISPM 15 and does it apply to GPC pallets?
ISPM 15 is the international standard for wood packaging material, requiring heat treatment or fumigation plus an official mark. It applies to any solid wood pallet or dunnage in international trade. Non-compliant pallets can be refused at destination and the whole consignment held, which costs far more than the pallet ever did.
Should GPC bags be marked with a batch number?
Yes, matching the certificate of analysis. Published guidance stresses that batch-level identification preserves material consistency from supplier to end user. Without a batch mark on every bag, a per-batch certificate is a document with nothing tying it to the material in front of you.
Can GPC be shipped in bulk?
Rarely, and we would not recommend it for most buyers. Bulk suits very large consumers with closed handling systems. For everyone else the contamination risk, moisture exposure and loss of batch traceability outweigh a packaging saving that is small anyway against a product worth hundreds of dollars a tonne.
What moisture limit should I specify for GPC?
The published cap is 0.50 percent, specified ex-works rather than as-shipped, with a retest right at destination. State what happens if it is exceeded, because a moisture clause without a remedy is decoration. Water absorbed in transit is billed at carbon price, which is the storage page's central point too.
Why do GPC bags fail at discharge?
Most often a damaged lifting loop or UV-degraded fabric after weeks in an outdoor yard. Woven polypropylene loses tensile strength in direct sun, and a loop that has been dragged rather than lifted can part under a full tonne. Both are preventable with a covered-storage requirement and lift-only discharge.
How should GPC be stored before use?
In covered, well-ventilated areas, away from slag-forming agents and anything generating dust. Published guidance is explicit that prolonged exposure to high ambient humidity, or open storage near slag-forming agents, affects bulk flowability and furnace charging accuracy.
What should a GPC packing clause say?
Format and bag rating, liner requirement, pallet treatment standard, bag marking with batch number, maximum and minimum fill per bag, and suitability for outdoor storage during transit. Six lines of text that prevent most of the disputes we hear about - a full template is above.
Is packaging cost significant in a GPC quote?
More than buyers expect and less than suppliers charge for. The jumbo-to-25 kg switch is worth USD 16 to 32 per tonne in bag cost alone before labour. Against a product at USD 850 to 1,050 per tonne that is 2 to 4 percent, comparable to a full particle-size change. It belongs in the negotiation.
Who pays when a bag fails at discharge?
Whoever the contract says, which is why the clause matters. In practice, if the failure is visible and photographed before the container is released, the claim is straightforward; if it is found a week later in your own warehouse, it is not. Photograph everything at discharge, and hold the container until you have.
Sources and known gaps
Physical characteristics (true density 2.20–2.26 g/cm³, bulk density 0.80–1.05 t/m³, high hardness and low friability), moisture cap of 0.50%, storage and handling guidance including the effect of fines on carbon recovery, and the 2026 grade price bands for 0–1 mm and 1–5 mm: ferrosilicon.co, 28 and 30 December 2025. Packing formats (25 kg kraft bags with waterproof ply, 1,000 kg jumbo bags, fumigated pallets) from Chinese supplier listings sampled on Made-in-China, August 2026. ISPM 15 as the international standard for wood packaging material.
What is ours, not sourced: the bag-cost arithmetic at USD 0.40–0.80 per 25 kg bag; the 3 percent degradation scenario; the container loading table, which assumes 33 m³ usable volume and a 28 tonne payload for a 20 ft general purpose container; the 10–15 percent pallet volume penalty, which is our judgement; and the packing clause template. No published source gives a measured degradation rate for GPC in transit, so our 3 percent is a scenario, not a finding.
