When calcium carbide reacts with water, acetylene is formed:

Acetylene (C2H2) is a colourless gas with a faint characteristic odour. Its boiling point is -83.8°C and its freezing point is -80.8°C. Technical acetylene, which is derived from calcium carbide, has an unpleasant odor due to the impurities it contains. Acetylene undergoes combustion in the air, as a result of which a significant amount of heat is released. Therefore, acetylene mixed with oxygen is widely used for welding and cutting metals. Acetylene, a highly reactive compound, burns in air at temperatures up to 3150°C, releasing a significant amount of heat when combined with oxygen. This property makes it a widely used material for welding and cutting metals.
