Silicon is produced by reducing silica (sand, SiO₂) with carbon. To make the cell even purer for use in very high-quality products (e.g., semiconductors), we use a process called "zonal refining". As a result, the purity of the element becomes higher than 1:10⁹. Silicon occurs in two different forms. Brown silicon is a powder, while gray (metallic silicon) is used more often. Bulk silicon does not react with oxygen, water, acids (except HF), but dissolves in hot alkalis.
