An iron alloy consisting of molybdenum and iron, usually containing 50-60% molybdenum, used as an alloying additive in the smelting of steel. Molybdenum iron is an alloy of molybdenum and iron. Its main function is as an additive to molybdenum in steelmaking.

The addition of molybdenum to steel provides the following benefits:
- Homogeneous fine-grained structure
- Improved hardenability
These advantages eliminate temper embrittlement. In high-speed steel, molybdenum can replace some of the tungsten. Molybdenum, along with other alloying elements, is a key ingredient in the production of stainless, heat-resistant, acid-resistant, tool steels and alloys with special physical properties. Adding molybdenum to cast iron increases its strength and wear resistance.
