Zinc Wire Price Trend: September 2026 - Why the Listings You Found Are Arithmetically Impossible
Updated 9 September 2026 · 9 min read · Data through the 7 September 2026 LME close
Short answer
LME zinc cash settled at USD 4,157 per tonne on 7 September 2026, the highest close in our 2026 series, and the cash-to-three-month spread has been positive every month since July. If you are budgeting zinc wire off a B2B listing that says USD 3,000 to USD 3,100 per tonne, you are budgeting below the cost of the metal the wire is made from - those tiers are stale by roughly USD 1,400. Realistic September 2026 offers sit near USD 4,450 to USD 4,900 per tonne before freight.
- LME zinc cash, 172 trading days to 7 September 2026: average USD 3,465.90/t, low 3,010, high 4,157
- Monthly cash average climbed from USD 3,220 in January to USD 3,875 in August - a 20 percent move
- The curve flipped from contango to backwardation in July and has steepened every month since
- Metal is roughly 91 percent of a wire invoice; conversion is a few hundred dollars, not a few thousand
Start with the number that breaks every listing
Before any trend line, deal with this. Search for thermal spray zinc wire and you will find a widely republished listing for 2.0 mm pure material with tiered pricing: USD 3,100 per tonne at 3 to 9 tonnes, USD 3,050 at 10 to 24, USD 3,000 at 25 and above. It has been copied across a dozen directories. It is also impossible.
Those tiers sit below LME zinc cash on every single trading day of 2026. The year's average is USD 3,465.90 per tonne. A wire maker buys special high grade zinc ingot, casts rod, draws it through dies, spools it and ships it - and then sells it for USD 500 a tonne less than the ingot cost? That does not happen. The listing predates the rally and nobody has maintained it.
The 2026 curve, month by month
Here is the whole year. Cash settlement averages by month, with the average gap between cash and the three-month contract. We computed both from the daily LME series; the sign flip in the last column is the part that matters.
| Month 2026 | Trading days | Cash avg (USD/t) | 3M avg (USD/t) | Cash − 3M (USD/t) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 21 | 3,220 | 3,254 | −34 |
| February | 20 | 3,321 | 3,346 | −25 |
| March | 22 | 3,188 | 3,213 | −25 |
| April | 20 | 3,362 | 3,369 | −7 |
| May | 19 | 3,488 | 3,499 | −11 |
| June | 22 | 3,540 | 3,547 | −7 |
| July | 23 | 3,596 | 3,570 | +26 |
| August | 20 | 3,875 | 3,773 | +102 |
| September (to 7th) | 5 | 4,071 | 3,917 | +154 |
Read the last column as a sentence. Through the first half of 2026 the market was in mild contango, which is what a comfortable market looks like - metal stored, financed, and available on demand. From July it inverted. Two months later the front of the curve is trading USD 154 per tonne above the deferred contract, and on 7 September specifically the gap was USD 182.
The backwardation clock
Backwardation is the market saying it wants metal today more than it wants metal in December. It is not a sentiment indicator you can argue with - it is the price of immediacy. Zero line in the middle.
One honest caveat on this chart: September is five sessions. Five days is not a month, and one quiet week in October would pull that bar back down. The July-to-August move is the real signal, because it rests on 43 trading days rather than five.
What actually went up, and how much of it reaches your invoice
Compare 2026 against 2025 on the same yardstick. The USGS put the 2025 LME zinc cash annual average at 130 US cents per pound, which is USD 2,866 per tonne at 22.0462 pounds per tonne. Our computed 2026 year-to-date average is USD 3,465.90, or 157.2 cents per pound. That is +20.9 percent year on year.
Now the part buyers get wrong. A 20.9 percent rise in zinc does not produce a 20.9 percent rise in your wire invoice - it produces slightly less, because the conversion premium is largely fixed in nominal terms. Here is the decomposition.
Worked decomposition - 2.0 mm zinc wire, September 2026
LME zinc cash, 7 Sep 2026 USD 4,157 /t
Conversion (cast, draw, spool, pack) USD 400 /t <- negotiated; the only flexible part
-------------
Wire ex-works, 20 kg spools USD 4,557 /t
Metal share of invoice 4,157 / 4,557 = 91.2 %
Zinc moves +10 %:
LME 4,573 + 400 conversion USD 4,973 /t = +9.2 % on the invoice
Zinc moves +20 %:
LME 4,988 + 400 conversion USD 5,388 /t = +18.2 % on the invoice
Zinc falls 20 %:
LME 3,326 + 400 conversion USD 3,726 /t = -18.2 % on the invoice
So the transmission rate is roughly 0.91: every 10 percent move in LME zinc becomes about a 9.1 percent move in the wire price. That cuts both ways, and it is the reason a supplier who will not disclose their premium is asking you to take an unhedged position without telling you how large it is.
The practical consequence is simple: negotiate the premium, not the price. The price follows an exchange neither side influences. The premium - drawing, spooling, packaging, margin - is the only part either party controls, and in our experience it varies by a factor of two between suppliers quoting an identical specification.
What we are not going to do
We are not going to publish a Q4 2026 zinc price forecast. Zinc has an exchange settlement, which means the market already publishes its own forecast in the form of the forward curve, and our opinion adds nothing to it. If you want the market's view, read the three-month contract: USD 3,975 on 7 September. That is the price at which real money will transact for December delivery.
We are also not going to tell you that backwardation guarantees further gains. LME zinc stocks fell to 86,525 tonnes on 18 August and were back to 113,100 tonnes by 7 September - a 30 percent rebuild in three weeks. Stocks rebuilding while the front of the curve stays tight is an unstable combination that resolves in one of two directions. We do not know which, and anyone who tells you they do is selling something.
How to budget in this market
- ✔Budget off the previous month's LME cash average plus your negotiated premium. For October that starts from August's USD 3,875 and September's partial USD 4,071.
- ✔Name the pricing basis in the contract. Cash, three-month, or monthly average. In a backwardated market the difference runs to USD 182 per tonne.
- ✔Set quote validity at three to five days, not thirty. A thirty-day validity on a 20 percent annualised mover is a free option written for the supplier.
- ✔Split large orders. On a multi-month programme, price each shipment at its own LME basis rather than fixing the whole lot in month one.
- ✔Check the diameter on the quote. Fine wire costs more per tonne to draw than coarse wire. A 1.6 mm price is not a 4.0 mm price, and the difference is conversion, not metal.
FAQ
What is the price of zinc wire in September 2026?
There is no single number, and the figures circulating in B2B listings cannot be trusted this month. LME zinc cash settled at USD 4,157 per tonne on 7 September 2026. Thermal spray zinc wire is LME zinc plus a conversion premium that is rarely quoted below about USD 300 per tonne, which puts a real September offer in the USD 4,450 to USD 4,900 per tonne band before freight. Listings showing USD 3,000 to USD 3,100 per tonne are below the metal cost and should be treated as stale by roughly USD 1,400.
Why are published zinc wire listings cheaper than the zinc metal they are made from?
Because they have not been updated. A widely republished listing for 2.0 mm pure zinc thermal spray wire shows tiers of USD 3,100, 3,050 and 3,000 per tonne. LME zinc cash averaged USD 3,465.90 per tonne across the 172 trading days from 2 January to 7 September 2026, so those tiers sit below even the year's average. Nobody sells drawn wire below ingot. The listing predates the rally.
What does LME zinc backwardation mean for a zinc wire buyer?
It means the curve is paying you to take metal now rather than later. The average cash-to-three-month gap was minus USD 34 per tonne in January 2026 and plus USD 154 across the first five sessions of September. A supplier pricing off the three-month contract rather than cash is quoting against a curve that sat USD 182 per tonne below spot on 7 September, which flatters their offer right up to the day they have to buy ingot.
How much of the zinc wire price is the metal itself?
About 91 percent. Thermal spray wire is special high grade zinc cast into rod, drawn and spooled. Drawing adds labour, die wear, power, packaging and scrap recovery loss, and conversion typically lands between USD 300 and USD 600 per tonne depending on diameter and pack format. On a September 2026 offer of USD 4,557 with LME at USD 4,157, metal is 91.2 percent of the invoice. That also fixes the transmission rate: a 10 percent zinc move becomes roughly a 9.1 percent move in the wire price.
How often does zinc wire pricing move?
Daily, if the contract is LME-linked, because the input settles on an exchange every trading day. In practice most suppliers hold a quote for three to ten days and re-price on expiry. Budget monthly using the prior month's LME cash average plus your premium. The 2026 monthly cash averages ran from USD 3,220 in January to USD 3,875 in August - a spread of USD 655 per tonne, or 20 percent - so a budget set in January would have been badly wrong by August.
Should I fix my zinc wire price or follow the LME?
Fix for a defined tonnage and period if your contract is small enough that a 20 percent move hurts but does not threaten the job. Follow the LME if you spray continuously and can absorb variance, because a fixed premium over a floating basis is the structure that keeps a supplier honest. What you should never do is accept a flat fixed price without asking which month's LME average the supplier hedged against - in a backwardated market that one question is worth up to USD 182 per tonne.
