Ferrosilicon is a ferroalloy, a term used to describe a mixture of metals reduced to a solid state. It is made up of iron and silicon and is produced by reducing silica.
Ferrosilicon is used as a deoxidizing and alloying additive in the smelting of electrical, spring, corrosion-resistant and heat-resistant steels.
An increase in the silicon content in ferrosilicon reduces its density.
Silicon increases the hardness of steel, increases its tensile strength, elastic and yield limits, increases oxidation resistance and reduces energy losses. The melting points of 45% and 75% of ferrosilicon are 1330...1220 and 1300...1330 °C, respectively. Ferrosilicon is produced in ferroalloy arc furnaces by reducing silicon from quartzite with carbon (coke).
