Ferrosilicon is a ferroalloy composed of iron and silicon. Ferrosilicon is an alloy of iron and silicon produced by smelting coke, steel scraps, quartz (or silica) as a raw material, and using an electric furnace. Because silicon and oxygen are readily synthesized from silica, ferrosilicon is often used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking, and because SiO2 releases a large amount of heat, it is also advantageous in raising the temperature of molten steel during deoxidation. At the same time, ferrosilicon can be used as an alloying additive, widely applied in low-alloy structural steel, spring steel, bearing steel, heat-resistant steel and electrical silicon steel, ferrosilicon is often used as a reducing agent in ferroalloy manufacturing and chemical industry.
