A small amount of calcium carbide (made from waste and low-quality raw materials) reacts with water, acetylene gas and a by-product (hydrated lime). At the same time, a large amount of heat is generated. The amount of gas released depends on the purity of the calcium carbide (the purer the carbide, the more acetylene is released) and can range from 235 to 285 liters for each kilogram of carbide.
Theoretically, 0.56 liters of water are required to decompose 1 kg of calcium carbide, but in practice, 5 to 26 liters of liquid are used to better cool the acetylene and ensure the safety of the process. The speed of the reaction depends on how fine and clean the starting material is, as well as the temperature and purity of the water. (The cleaner and smaller the size, the higher the temperature, the higher the reaction rate).
