Ferrovanadium, which contains 35-80% vanadium, is produced in an electric arc furnace. First, scrap iron is melted. A mixture of V2O5, aluminum, and flux such as calcium fluoride or calcium oxide is then added. During this process, aluminum is converted into alumina, which forms a solid residue, and V2O5 is reduced to metallic vanadium, which dissolves in molten iron. Because heat is generated during this reaction, it is only necessary to reach a flash temperature of 950°C (1,750°F) to supply heat. After that, the electrodes are removed until the reaction is completed. The aluminothermic process can also be carried out in a steel pot with a refractory lining or in a water-cooled copper crucible.
