Ferrovanadium FV40 Description
Ferrovanadium is an alloy containing 35-60 vanadium, 1-3% silicon, 0.5-1.5% aluminum and iron.
Properties:
Increases the resistance of steel to mechanical stress;
ensures the formation of a fine crystalline structure;
increases the strength and hardenability of steel;
increases resistance to tempering;
stops grain growth of fine-grained steel at increasing temperature;
increases oxidation resistance;
increases the annealing temperature.

Applications:
In ferrous metallurgy, ferrovanadium is used in the alloying of steel, alloys and cast irons to obtain a fine crystalline structure, to increase the impact toughness and resistance of steel against alternating loads, and to increase the hardenability.
Ferrovanadium is produced by several methods:
silicothermic (silicoalumothermic): during the melting process, vanadium pentoxide is first obtained from ore, which is then reduced in an electric furnace using silicon or aluminum;
hydrometallurgical method is used when vanadium content in titanium-magnesium ore is high. The iron-vanadium concentrate is pelletized or sintered to produce vanadium pentoxide;
at pyrometallurgical method vanadium is obtained from pig iron, which is formed after sintering of iron-vanadium concentrate. The pig iron is oxidized in a converter to produce slag with 10% vanadium.
