Electrosilicothermal process for the production of ferro-vanadium 50

The flake vanadium pentoxide was purified in an electric arc furnace through two stages of reduction and refining. The furnace was alkaline, and 75% ferrosilicon and a small amount of aluminum were used as reducing agents. In the reduction stage, most of the reducing agent and vanadium pentoxide sheet (60-70% of the total) were charged into the electric furnace, and the thermal reduction of the silicon was carried out under calcium oxide slag. When the V2O5 content of the slag is less than 0.35%, the slag is released (the so-called lean slag, which can be discarded or used as building materials) during the refining period. In this step, vanadium pentoxide and lime are added to remove the excess silicon and aluminum in the liquid alloy. When the alloy composition meets the required characteristics, the iron alloy can be removed. The slag released at a later stage of refining is called rich slag (contains V2O5 up to 8~12%), which is returned to use when the supply to the next furnace begins. The liquid alloy is usually cast into a cylindrical mold, which is finished after cooling, forming, crushing, and slag removal. This method is commonly used to smelt vanadium iron containing 40-60% vanadium, and up to 98% of vanadium can be recovered.
