Silicon nitride (Si3N4) is a special kind of ceramic material that is used in many applications. It copes especially well with high temperatures, as it does not collapse. This made it a good choice for use in engines during the energy crisis of the 1970s. Its high-temperature strength and resistance to sudden changes in temperature made it possible to create an engine that could operate at temperatures higher than conventional internal combustion engines, which increased their efficiency. Silicon nitride has two common phases – α and β. α-Si3N4 is an oxygen-rich material that has long been thought to be a two-phase composite. Compared to the α-Si3N4 phase, the morphology of β-Si3N4 is usually fibrous, and it is often formed from α-Si3N4 during sintering. However, pure β-Si3N4 sinters poorly, produces little to no grain growth, and is more practical as an agent for fiber reinforcement in composite materials.
