Silicon Metal Description
Most of the silicon recycled annually is used to make iron and steel. Ferrosilicon can contain from 15 to 90% silicon. Iron and silicon are combined in an electric arc furnace. Ore and a carbon source, such as coking coal, are crushed and charged into a furnace along with scrap iron. At temperatures above 1900°C, carbon reacts with oxygen in the ore to form carbon monoxide. The remaining iron and silicon form molten ferrosilicon, which can be collected from the bottom of the furnace. Once cooled and solidified, ferrosilicon can be shipped and used in the production of iron and steel. The same method is used to produce silicon with a purity of more than 99 percent. Silicon is also used in steel smelting, aluminum cast alloys, and silane chemicals.
