Metallic silicon is usually grouped according to its impurity content of iron, aluminum, and calcium. Depending on the amount of industry, metallic silicon is usually obtained by separating silicon dioxide from carbon in an electric furnace. The chemical reaction looks like this: SiO2+2C → Si+2CO. The silicon produced in this way has a purity of 97-98% and is called metallic silicon. It is then melted and recrystallized, and the impurities are removed with acid to obtain metallic silicon with a purity of 99.7~99.8μm. Metallic silicon is composed mainly of silicon, so it has properties similar to silicon. There are two types of silicon: amorphous silicon and crystalline silicon.

Amorphous silicon is a grayish-black powder and is actually a microcrystal. Crystalline silicon has the crystalline structure and semiconductor properties of diamond. It has a melting point of 1410 °C, a boiling point of 2355 °C, a Mohs hardness of 7, and brittleness. Amorphous silicon is chemically reactive and can burn strongly in oxygen. It reacts with halogens, nitrogen, carbon, and other non-metals at high temperatures, and can also react with magnesium, calcium, iron, and other metals to form silicides. Amorphous silicon is insoluble in almost all inorganic and organic acids, including hydrofluoric acid, but can dissolve in a mixture of nitric and hydrofluoric acids. A strong solution of sodium hydroxide can dissolve amorphous silicon with the release of hydrogen gas. Crystalline silicon does not react with oxygen even at high temperatures. It is also insoluble in any inorganic and organic acids, but soluble in a mixture of nitric and hydrofluoric acids, as well as in strong sodium hydroxide solutions.
