Ferrosilicon is used in the steel industry as a deoxidising agent. Deoxidising the molten steel is necessary at the end of the steelmaking process to guarantee the quality of the steel. Due to its high affinity for oxygen, silicon is an ideal candidate for use as a deoxidiser. In addition to reacting with oxygen, ferrosilicon also reacts with sulphur to remove sulphur from the molten steel.

Ferrosilicon with a silicon content of 45% to 90% is used in the steel industry. Ferrosilicon with a silicon content of 75% is most widely used in the steel industry for several reasons. Firstly, the production process of 75% silicon ferrosilicon is mature and cost effective. Second, 75% silicon ferrosilicon is heavier and is not affected by addition. Thirdly, 75% silicon ferrosilicon with high silicon content generates a large amount of heat during the reduction period, which can raise the furnace temperature.
