Calcium carbide (CaC₂) is a highly reactive ionic compound with distinct chemical properties, particularly its vigorous reactions with water, acids, oxidizers, and other substances.
1. Reaction with Water
Calcium carbide reacts violently with water, producing acetylene gas (C₂H₂) and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂):
CaC2+2H2O→C2H2↑+Ca(OH)2+heat
Characteristics:
Highly exothermic reaction, releasing flammable acetylene gas (explosion risk in air at 2.5–81% concentration).
Calcium hydroxide forms a caustic solution, posing skin/eye irritation risks.
2. Reaction with Acids
Strong acids (e.g., HCl, H₂SO₄) react rapidly with CaC₂ to release acetylene:
Hydrochloric Acid:CaC2+2HCl→C2H2↑+CaCl2
Sulfuric Acid:CaC2+H2SO4→C2H2↑+CaSO4
Risk: Acetylene gas can ignite spontaneously if mixed with air and exposed to sparks or heat.
3. Reaction with Oxidizers
Calcium carbide reacts explosively with strong oxidizing agents:
Chlorine (Cl₂):CaC2+3Cl2→CaCl2+2CCl4Produces toxic and flammable carbon tetrachloride (CCl₄).
Nitric Acid (HNO₃):
May lead to explosive decomposition, releasing nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) and acetylene.
4. Thermal Decomposition
At extremely high temperatures (>2300°C), CaC₂ decomposes into calcium and carbon:
CaC2ΔCa+2C
Note: This reaction is rarely observed industrially due to the extreme conditions required.
5. Reaction with Metal Oxides
When heated with metal oxides (e.g., Fe₂O₃), CaC₂ reduces the oxide to metal and releases acetylene:
CaC2+Fe2O3heat2Fe+CaO+2C2H2↑
Used in metallurgical processes for metal extraction.
6. Reaction with Ammonia
Slow reaction with concentrated ammonia solution forms ammonium carbide and calcium hydroxide:
CaC2+2NH3⋅H2O→NH2C2H2+Ca(OH)2
7. Reaction with Sulfides
Reacts with hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) or sulfides (e.g., Na₂S) to produce calcium sulfide and acetylene:
CaC2+H2S→CaS+C2H2↑
Safety Considerations
Flammability: Acetylene gas is highly flammable; avoid open flames or sparks.
Corrosive Byproducts: Calcium hydroxide can cause burns-use gloves and eye protection.
Ventilation: Handle in well-ventilated areas to prevent acetylene accumulation.
