Properties Of Silicon Metal
Most metallurgical silicon metal is used as an alloying agent in the aluminium industry due to its ability to increase the strength of aluminium. Demand from the aluminium industry has grown steadily in recent years due to increased usage of aluminium in structural engineering, aircraft manufacture and the automotive industry. Aluminium alloys are lighter and more resistant to corrosion than carbon-steel and can be made by addition of metals such as copper, zinc, magnesium, manganese as well as silicon.
How do you make Silicon Metal Lump
Raw Materials:
Silica (Silicon Dioxide, SiO2): This is commonly obtained from quartz, which is abundant in nature.
Carbon Source: Typically, carbon in the form of coke (a carbon-rich material derived from coal) is used as the reducing agent.
Preparation of Raw Materials:
The silica is usually first converted to silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4) by reacting it with chlorine gas. This is typically done by heating silica with carbon in the presence of chlorine.
SiO2 + 2C + 2Cl2 → SiCl4 + 2CO
Formation of Silicon Metal:
The silicon tetrachloride is then reduced to silicon metal in an electric arc furnace.
SiCl4 + 2C → Si + 2Cl2 + 2CO
Purification:
The resulting silicon may still contain impurities. Additional refining processes employed to purify the silicon.
Casting:
The purified molten silicon is then cast into molds to form ingots or lumps.
Crushing and Sizing:
The silicon metal ingots may be crushed and sized to meet specific customer requirements.
