Ferrosilicon is a type of ferroalloy composed of iron and silicon. Ferrosilicon is made from coke and quartz (or silica) in an electric furnace. 65 Fe Silicon Alloy production
Iron ore (Fe2O3), quartz (SiO2) and carbon (C) in the form of coal, coke or biochar are added to the top of the furnace. Three electrodes in the furnace heat the material. At around 2000°C, the carbon reacts with the oxygen in the quartz, leaving liquid silicon. Iron oxide in the iron ore particles reacts similarly with the carbon to form pure iron. The molten iron and silicon are mixed and pounded with a ladle.
