Ferromolybdenum is delivered in lumps, the lump size range is 10-150mm, the particle size below 10×10mm shall not exceed 5% of the total weight of the batch, a small amount of lumps are allowed with a maximum size of 180mm in one direction.

The raw material for smelting ferromolybdenum is mainly molybdenite (MoS2). Before smelting, molybdenum concentrate is usually oxidized and roasted in a multi-hearth furnace to obtain roasted molybdenum ore with less than 0.07% sulfur. Ferromolybdenum smelting is generally done by the extra-furnace method. The furnace is a cylinder placed on a sand base, lined with clay bricks, with ferrosilicon containing 75% silicon and a small amount of aluminum particles as reductant. The charge is added to the cylinder at one time and then smelted by the upper ignition method. On the surface of the material with initiator (saltpeter, aluminum or magnesium chips), ignition that is the intense reaction, and then calm, slag, remove the barrel. The molybdenum and iron ingots are first cooled in the sand nest, then sent to the cooling room to flush water cooling, and finally crushed and refined. The metal recovery rate is 92-99%. In the steelmaking industry in recent years, molybdenum oxide briquettes are widely used instead of ferromolybdenum.
